Special needs Children and Youth worker

Do you have experience working with children with special needs or developmental disabilities? Do you have a heart to share the good news of Christ with socially isolated families in an unreached part of Europe?
2-3 Years
Full Time
As soon as possible
We are looking for someone who has experience working with developmentally disabled children, and has a heart to help them increase their skills in the areas of communication, socializing, personal care and education while at the same time sharing the hope and love of Christ with the child and their families as they minister to them.

Situated in Southeast Europe in an area known as the Balkan Peninsula, Kosovo is the second-newest country in the world and has a population of approximately 1.8 million.

Kosovo has no official religion according to their constitution, however over 90% of the population identify with different sects of Islam making it the overwhelmingly majority religion. While different sects of Christianity exist in Kosovo, it’s estimated that the Protestant Church, which primarily developed following the ethnic war in 1999, makes up less than .2% of the total population.

Though culture in Kosovo is primarily influenced by a combination of Islamic idealism, folk religion and European secularism, a gradual shift of the younger population towards modernization has had an evident effect on culture, nationalism and religion as a whole.

In spite of this gradual shift towards modernization, many families who have children with disabilities continue to socially isolate themselves from society as there can be a stigma surrounding the child’s disability, whether perceived or indeed factual. Though the foundation of the ideas responsible for the stigma are debatable, many have been said to believe that having a child with disabilities is an earthly punishment from God, administered based on the wrong doing of another family member, and therefore a shame on the family.

Our goals in this arm of our ministry are fivefold:
-Assist the child in their development in all applicable areas
-Practically assist the child’s family
-Help to disassociate disability with public shame in society
-Share the hope and love of Christ with the child and their family
-Promote and establish new vibrant communities of Jesus followers amongst the least reached

If you feel that you can identify with our need and have the drive to assist our team in accomplishing these ministry goals while also being passionate about esteeming the local church and engaging in discipleship as part of the process, please contact us!

Requirements:
• It is preferred that applicants have some amount of training in the field of social work, child psychology, therapy (occupational, art), applied behavior analysis, or similar
• Heart for the lost
• Ability to work on a team with and without direct leadership
• Willingness to learn local Albanian language
• Passion for working amongst marginalized, special needs, urban poor, or ethnic minorities
• Desire to participate in other team ministry, such as prayer, discipleship and outreach
