Following floods that have been described as 'biblical' in the central region of Greece, Thessaly, thousands of people have been displaced, left homeless, and/or lost their livelihoods as farms and shops were destroyed. We will be establishing a base in Trikala, Greece from which we will work to clean homes, help rebuild, provide food and clothing, and meet whatever other community needs we can. We anticipate having a presence in the region until after summer 2024.
Volunteers will partner with local churches in Thessaly to assist with their relief work.
Volunteers will be involved in cleaning flooded homes, rebuilding projects, food and clothing distribution, among other practical work.
Participants should be flexible in regard to schedules and planning and should be able-bodied.
Participants must be in good health and physically able to stand, bend, lift, walk, and do other physical activity as needed.
Accommodation will be in a church dorm or an apartment rented by OM.
Food will need to be arranged with OM Greece's volunteer coordinator. It will depend on if the volunteer is staying at a rented flat or a church dorm. The cost will vary and is separate from the cost of the outreach.
Volunteers are responsible for their own travel to Athens, Greece. We will arrange for their travels from Athens to Trikala.
Citizens of the EU, Schengen Member States, and Canada do not need a visa for this outreach. Citizens of the USA will need to apply for a visa waiver (see more info at etias.info). All others may need a visa. If a visa is required, and a fee is involved, it is the participant’s responsibility to pay the fees. You can check if you need a visa here: https://www.mfa.gr/en/visas/visas-for-foreigners-traveling-to-greece/countries-requiring-or-not-requiring-visa.html
