When Rachel flew to Brunei for a wedding, she had no idea her life was about to change — she would meet her future husband and later journey into ministry together.

Rachel grew up in Mauritius but moved to Australia to study medicine. There, she joined a university group called Overseas Christian Fellowship and made friendships that would outlast her university years. Two of those friends invited her to their wedding in Brunei. “It was my first time visiting Brunei to attend their wedding. That’s when I met Ren Wei, one of the groomsmen helping transport guests.”

The two started a long-distance relationship before marrying in 2019. “When we started dating, Rachel and I talked about going on a mission trip together and being open to where God might lead us,” Ren Wei shares.

Ren Wei grew up in Brunei and began attending Sunday school after a family friend invited him. His parents were free-thinkers, but their lives changed when his mother was later diagnosed with cancer. “During Mum’s treatment and recovery, our family experienced God’s presence in a profound way. We gave our hearts to Christ, and from then on, I began to grow more in my faith.”

After marrying Rachel in 2019, Ren Wei moved to Australia. They went on a short-term mission trip to North Africa in 2023 to visit a Christian hospital. Their experience was a stepping stone toward considering further cross-cultural mission as a family. “It showed me how much people needed hope and purpose,” Ren Wei shares. “Before going, I felt I wasn’t experienced or suited for cross-cultural ministry, but I learnt that God works through people who are willing to say yes.”

Over the years, the couple has experienced God’s grace, protection and faithfulness countless times. “Time and again, we’re reminded that each day is a gift from God,” they share.

During Rachel’s second pregnancy, her doctor raised a concern about the child’s development. Faced with the possibility of raising a child who might require special care, overseas mission work seemed less likely for their family. “This also made me think about how I would live differently if God gave my baby the gift of health,” she says.

The couple was relieved when further tests showed they would have a healthy baby. But a few hours after birth, Rachel had a medical emergency that almost cost her life. “God chose to preserve my life. Again it made me think of how I should use this life and health that God has given me, for Him.”

“Since God has blessed our family with health, strength and opportunity, we want to be faithful and do our part,” Ren Wei adds.

Now the family is serving with OM for one year on board Logos Hope, with Rachel as a doctor in the ship’s medical clinic and Ren Wei using his finance and accounting skills to serve wherever needed. They have just walked across the gangway in Aberdeen, Scotland. “This will be a big change for our family, but we hope the year ahead will be a time of growth. And though our children are young, we hope they will also grow in their love for Jesus as they see how God is at work in the ports we visit and as they see Christians from many different countries come together to serve the Lord.”

They are excited about the chance to make the most of each day and remain open to God’s leading. “Our service on board is not something we’re doing in isolation, but is an extension of the ministry of many faithful believers who pray, support, give and send. Together, we share the same invitation to make Christ known.”
