Young people travelled from across the UK — and some from even further — to join the week-long event on the theme of PATHS – Wisdom’s Call. Looking at the book of Proverbs, they were challenged to make wise decisions in life, guided by God.
Esther, 16, attended for the first time this year after hearing her friends talk about how much they enjoyed the event.
“I wasn’t expecting anything really great because I’ve been to some bad camps before,” she recalled. “But it’s been great. The worship is amazing and everyone is very into it. You can tell they believe what they’re singing. My small group has made plans to meet up again already — I’ll be back next year!”
She said she will work on what she learnt this year. “We’ve got to show wisdom and have our life rooted in Jesus, and not just have it in our heart but have other people see it too,” she said.
Be bold!
At the event, the young people were encouraged to be bold in their faith — something 16-year-old Ben found difficult to do when he joined a group to take part in an outreach to the seaside town of Morecambe one afternoon.
“We got there and before I was so nervous, thinking I’m not ready for this,” he explained. “Before we went we did a bit of training, and some of the questions we practiced, I was thinking ‘if someone asked me that I’ll crumble’.
“When we got there, me and my friend, we thought it would be wise to pray that God would give us someone to talk to. So 30 seconds later we were walking along and there were two people vaping on a bench. When you think ‘God give me someone to talk to’ you don’t think He’ll send you people just like that. I said ‘Hi’ but was going to walk by, but they started a conversation with us. It was pretty incredible that we prayed that, and although I wasn’t trusting God would fulfil that prayer, He did straight away.”
Ben admitted in the past year he had been shy about sharing his faith with his friends. The night before the outreach, when the speaker talked about ‘safe Christians’ who never mention their faith, Ben said it struck a chord.
“I felt I was a ‘safe Christian’, behaving like that for the past year or so,” he said. “I prayed with one of the leaders that I wouldn’t even have to say I was a Christian, that it would be so obvious and people would just know when they were talking to me. On the outreach, we were talking to a guy for a while and then when we said we were Christians, he said he’d thought from the moment he saw us walking towards him that we were. That was another incredible answer to prayer.”
