“It’s been a steep learning curve,” says Nick, “but very rewarding.” Nick began ship life as a member of the ICT department, which manages the ship’s information and communications technology, as well as audiovisual needs, including the lights, sound, screens and recordings of all events. He has just stepped into the role of head of the department.
Nick had heard about OM’s Ship Ministry and how he could use his IT skills to serve. “I tried to be a witness in my workplace, and while this did open some conversations and is a calling many have, I felt that this was not right for me,” shares Nick. “I felt like I was living two lives – one at work and a different one at home and church.”
Now, he’s involved in ministry every day. “We have multiple onboard events to connect with people,” shares Nick. “They are coming to be strengthened in their faith through the bookfair, worship nights, theatre events, and so much more. My role here means I’m involved in some way in essentially every part of the ship’s life.”
While Nick’s role is technical, he believes God called him so that he could move God into the centre of his life. “Before, I was living a life with God on the side,” he shares. “Now, I try to focus on God, especially when it’s chaotic or unplanned, to start praying or play worship music.”
Every few weeks, Nick steps ashore with other crewmembers to serve local communities. He’s taught at schools, played soccer, ran English classes, and even helped upgrade the roof of a children’s home. During one recent youth night, his team went door to door to talk with the locals. “We heard their real concerns. It was a time to really move among the people and show the love of Jesus to them.”
Nick has experienced many busy and challenging times on board. “But it’s been life-changing,” he says. “I’ve seen such amazing things here. I’ve seen the Lord work and answers to prayer. My hope is that after the ship, I will continue to share God’s love around the world. I can only plan so much; the rest is in His hands.”
Nick encourages others to trust in God and place Him at the centre of it all. “When you start making more room for Him, He will start moving more in you. Sometimes, you may have to take leaps of faith, but it’s worth it.”
